Who is the Coleman Octagon for?

In short, this tent is ideal for groups of friends of a family who wants a spacious tent for three-season camping. As you can see from the pictures, this tent has a unique shape that is not common on the market. This size and shape is ideal for people who want a tent for social events. Firstly, the inside space is one single room that gives an open space social gatherings. Secondly, the tent allows for 360 reviews of the outside surroundings, which makes it perfect for summer parties and festivals.

The Octagon can manage eight people, but we would recommend this tent for around six people, especially if you have loads of gear.

Like most tents from the Coleman brand, the Octagon is an affordable tent that represents fantastic value for money. The Octagon is therefore great for those who want a tent that will be reliable when called upon a few times a year.

Although the tent can deal with wet weather and high winds, we wouldn’t recommend this tent for extreme weather. It will do the job, but there are better family tents for handling the rain.  Now for the bad part – The Octagon tent weighs 20.7kg, which means it will be hard to take this tent for long journeys on foot. With that said, this is not a backpacking tent, and it isn’t afraid to admit it.

Size + Shape

The Coleman Cortes is a true 8-person tent with total floor area of 20.8m sq, which allows for eight bags to squeeze inside. The shape and high walls create a tent that gives a lot of volume. Upon stepping into the tent you won’t feel trapped, like what is common with many other tents. You can open the windows to give the illusion of even more space.

Clearly this is a large octagon tent that offers plenty of space, but what about when someone wants a bit of privacy? Fortunately, this tent comes with a portable partition wall. It is simply a case of zipping the partition wall from the ceiling to the base to instantly from two rooms.

Although large in size, the Octagon is relatively easy to set-up. It took my family about 20 minutes on our first go, although that didn’t include staking out the tent. The color coded poles especially come in handy, and they go together with just a few clicks. A quick read through the instructions is enough to get to grips with everything, or you could just watch the video below.

Materials + Weather

The Coleman Octagon is built using sturdy steel poles to withstand rain and wind. Around this frame you will find a polyester material that is treated to a waterproof coating that also protects against fires. In fact, this material has an impressive hydrostatic head of 2000mm, which is an indicator that determines how well a material can stay dry.

UVpro protects the fabric from harmful UV rays for tent longevity, the ripstop material prevents the material from tearing and ripping, while the sewn-in groundsheet stops bugs from entering.

Storage + Other Features

With no vestibules, there is no space outside the sleeping area for you to store extra gear.  With that said, the shape of the tent is perfect for storing gear. Regardless of how much gear you bring, the single-room tent has a design that is always spacious. On the inside of the tent you’ll find hanging hooks and built-in mesh pockets.

The hinge door is a nice feature that adds to the luxury appeal of this tent. The door means you aren’t forced to catch any flapping materials to get in and out. It also makes it easy to transfer your gear into the tent after tent up. You can see our other recommend hinge door tents here. Which reminds me, I haven’t quite got to adding this tent to that page yet (at time of writing).

We hope this Coleman Octagon Tent review has helped you to gain a better perspective of this family tent. To sum up, if you want a family tent that gives great surrounding views, this is the one to beat. Although it has an official capacity of 8 people, it would be better suited for 6 people.

The only thing we didn’t like about this tent is its weight as how hard it is to carry from place to place. As such, this is not an ideal tent for those travelling light. It has a great design for festivals, but we would only recommend this if you will be driving to your exact location. You can check our other 8-person tents here.

You’ll be protected from the weather thanks to the welded flooring and inverted seams for rain protection. With that said, this tent really shines in the summer months (if you pardon the pun). You can rolls the curtains to allow 360 degree airflow around the large spacious area.
