In this Coleman Cortes Octagon 8 tent review, we will be looking at the pros and cons of a well-known tent from a leading camping brand, Coleman. The tent has a unique octagon shape that makes it the ideal spacious living space for panoramic views. Without further ado, let’s get started.

Who is the Coleman Octagon for?
In short, this tent is ideal for groups of friends or a family. It’s an excellent spacious tent for three-season camping. As you can see from the pictures, this tent has a rather unique octagon shape that is not common on the market.
The size and shape make the Octagon 8 a great camping tent. However, it’s also ideal for people who want a tent for social events.
First, the inside space is one single room that provides an open space for groups to gather. Second, the tent allows for a 360-degree view of your surroundings, which makes it perfect for summer parties and festivals or just enjoying the nature surrounding you.
The Octagon can manage up to eight people, but we recommend this tent for around six people, especially if you have loads of gear.
Like most Coleman tents, the Octagon is an affordable tent that represents fantastic value for money. This is especially true when you consider the multitude of uses for this tent. The Octagon is therefore great for those who want a tent that will be reliable when called upon a few times a year.
Although the tent can deal with wet weather and high winds, we don’t recommend this tent for extreme weather. It will do the job, but there are better family tents for handling severe wind and rain.
Now for the bad part – The Octagon tent weighs 20.7kg, which means it will be hard to take this tent for long journeys on foot. This is not a backpacking tent, and it isn’t afraid to admit it. It is, however, a great glamping tent. It also comes with a sturdy wheeled carry bag to help you move it to your desired spot in your campsite.
- 360-degree views
- Superior airflow
- Sturdy build
- Not the lightest
Size & Shape
The Coleman Cortes is a true 8-person tent. The floor has a total area of 20.8m sq, which allows for eight sleeping bags to squeeze inside. However, you won’t be able to fit that many campers and their gear inside the tent, so you may need a separate awning to put gear under if you have that many people.
The shape and high walls provide maximum living space. The tent is head height across the entire inner tent space, so most campers will be able to stand totally upright inside. You can open the windows to give the illusion of even more space.
Clearly this is a large octagon tent that offers plenty of space, but what about when someone wants a bit of privacy? Fortunately, this tent comes with a removable partition curtain that you can use as a room divider. Simply use the zippers to put up the partition wall and the tent transforms from a single large room to two smaller rooms. That allows you to have both a living area and a bedroom that still has plenty of room for an airbed in a single tent.
Alternatively, you can use the tent without the partition or the flysheet and have it act as a gazebo-style bug-proof screen room.
Although large in size, the Octagon is relatively easy to set-up. It took my family about 20 minutes on our first go, although that didn’t include staking out the tent. The color-coded poles especially come in handy, and they go together with just a few clicks. A quick read through the instructions is enough to get to grips with everything, or you could just watch the video below.
Materials & Weather
The Coleman Octagon is built using sturdy steel poles to withstand rain and wind. Around this frame, you will find WeatherTec polyester material. It’s treated with a waterproof coating that is also fire retardant. In fact, this material has an impressive hydrostatic head of 2000mm. This means that a 2-meter water column can be placed on the fabric before droplets will begin to appear on the other side.
UV Guard protects the fabric from harmful UV rays for tent longevity as well as your skin to prevent sun damage. The ripstop material prevents the material from tearing and ripping, while the sewn-in groundsheet stops bugs from entering.
The Coleman Octagon 8 is available in green and orange.
Storage & Other Features
With no vestibules, there is no space outside the sleeping area for you to store extra gear. With that said, the shape of the tent is perfect for storing gear. Regardless of how much gear you bring, the single-room tent has a design that is always spacious. On the inside of the tent, you’ll find hanging hooks and built-in mesh pockets.
The patented Coleman hinge door is a nice feature that adds to the luxury appeal of this tent. The hinged front door means you aren’t forced to catch any flapping materials to get in and out and feels more like an actual door. It also makes it easy to transfer your gear into the tent after tent up. You can see our other recommend hinge door tents here.
We hope this Coleman Octagon Tent review has helped you to gain a better perspective of this family tent. To sum up, if you want a family tent that gives great surrounding views, this is the one to beat. Although it has an official capacity of 8 people, it would be better suited for 6 people. You can check our other 8-person tent recommendations here.
In this tent, you’ll be protected from the weather thanks to the welded flooring and inverted seams for rain protection. With that said, this tent really shines in the summer months (if you pardon the pun). You can roll the curtains to allow 360-degree airflow around the large spacious area.
We know the Coleman Octagon 8 Tent is a great addition to your wish list for your next camping trip.
