Here you have our list of the best tarp shelters for camping. Whether you want the best bushcraft tarp or the best shade tarp for camping, all products in this buyers guide are designed to protect you while out in the wild. As such, camping tarps are usually lightweight, waterproof, durable, and keep you warm. Please note that while there are many tarp shelters, not all of them are recommended by us. Without further ado, let’s dive in!
1. Sea to Summit Escapist Tarp
As the lightest camping tarp in this review, the Escapist tarp is our best backpacking tarp shelter. In fact, the tarp can compress down to the size of a water bottle, making it perfect for those who want to travel with the least weight possible.
The tarp gives 10 x 10 feet of protection, which makes it one of the best hiking tarps for couples with gear. Although large, the tent is easy to set-up thanks to eight guy-out locations that allow you to adjust the shelter while you are under it.
A tarp wouldn’t be very good if it couldn’t keep you dry. Luckily, the Escapist is a waterproof camping tarp with waterproof-treated nylon. With proper pitching, the Escapist can withstand pressure from severe wind and rain.
2. Kammok Kuhli XL Group Tarp Shelter
With a wingspan of nearly 200 inches, the Kammok’s Kuhli XL Group Tarp is the largest camping tarp in this review and one of the best family camping tarps. It is big enough to keep twelve campers dry and warm from the rain, and can even sleep up to eight people!
Despite this large size, the tarp weighs only 2.5lbs, which we find very surprising. As such, this is a great tarp for hiking in groups. This tarp is crafted from durable ripstop nylon that has a waterproof coating to stop leaks and keep users dry in rainstorms.
The Kammock Kuhli XL erects in seconds thanks to multiple line-locks and tensioners that suspend the camping tarp above ground. The ten guy-out points with stakes and trekking poles keep the shelter secure.
3. Stansport Reinforced Multi-Purpose Tarp
The Stansport is a traditional tarp that does exactly what you expect from a camping tarp. Although of a high quality, the tarp is an incredibly affordable camping tarp.
The versatile camping tarp can be used to protect your gear from rain, cover your hammock, or keep your firewood dry, and so much more. It is crafted from ripstop polyethylene that is laminated on both sides for extra durability. It even has reinforced edges and heavy-duty grommets that are rust-resistant!
Too sum up, if you’re looking for an affordable but reliable camping tent, this is the one for you. Oh, and it comes in a range of different sizes, from 5 x 7 feet to 24 x 36 feet.
4. MSR Thru-Hiker 100 Wing Canopy Shelter
This is a high-quality tarp that is secured into position by trekking poles and the supplied guy-lines. This is a very stable camping tarp thanks to tension-locks on all four of the tarp’s corners. You can even make the shelter as low or high as you would like, allowing you to create the perfect living environment. But if you don’t want to use the poles, you can use the MSR as a traditional tarp.
The tarp is available in 70 and 100 square feet, though this review is about the 100 version. Both sizes are large enough to provide comfortable living for up-to three adults. Despite this large size, the tarp is only 12 ounces for the smallest option.
Crafted from 20D ripstop nylon that has 1,200mm waterproof coating the tarp can protect you from downpours. If you want to keep the bugs out, you may also want to purchase the MSR Thru-Hiker Mesh House. By using the Wing Tarp Shelter and Mesh House together, you can create a minimalist bug-proof shelter.
